This year has been a great one for Groundwork South Yorkshire so we wanted to compile our top 10 moments of 2015.
1. 2400 trees planted
Groundwork South Yorkshire staff and volunteers have planted a total of 2400 trees in Rabbit Ings Country Park in Barnsley and at the Eastern Moors. Read more about the staff volunteering day here.
2. Groundwork South Yorkshire best NCS provider
This year saw Groundwork South Yorkshire achieve 150% of its contracted target to deliver the flagship government youth programme National Citizen Service across Sheffield. This makes us the most successful provider across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Read more about NCS here.
3. Over 40 new allotment plots created
The Groundwork allotments team have brought 25 previously unusable plots back up to standard. The team have also cleared enormous amounts of rubbish dumped on the sites to create 18 new plots across Barnsley. Find out how this was achieved here.
4. Chris Sayer wins Volunteer of the Year
Groundwork South Yorkshire’s volunteer Park Ranger, Chris Sayer, was awarded the Land Trust’s Volunteer of the Year award. This was a result of Chris’s hard work and dedication to Rabbit Ings Country Park. Read more about Chris’s award here.
5. Groundwork South Yorkshire was officially launched
In October, the Trust organised a spectacular launch event at The Source, Meadowhall. The event was attended by stakeholders, staff and beneficiaries from across the region. Groundwork South Yorkshire provided an insight into the work and presented the Annual Report. Read all about the launch here.
6. 25 jobs filled at local business
Groundwork South Yorkshire worked with new local business Cluck to fully recruit staff to man their new Sheffield based restaurant. This resulted in 25 local people gaining employment, 10 of whom were Groundwork Community Work Placement clients. Read more about the recruitment day here.
7. Talent Match coaches work with 491 NEET clients
This year has seen Groundwork South Yorkshire deliver advice and support to almost 500 young people in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham. Of these clients, over 50% in each region have gone on to employment, volunteering or formal education. Read about one person’s experience here.
8. New Groundwork South Yorkshire website launched
The new website, launched in October has received fantastic feedback from clients, partners and stakeholders. The design sought to streamline the services offered by the Trust into four business areas: Education, Employment, Enterprise and Environment. Visit the new website here.
9. Groundwork NCS graduates selected from thousands to represent UK
Jack Marshall and Samavia Hussain both completed NCS with Groundwork South Yorkshire in the Summer. They went on to be selected as 2 of 100 graduates (from over 80,000 applicants!) to represent young people across the UK on the NCS Leaders Programme. You can read more about their journey here.
10. Tesco Bags of Help launched across South Yorkshire
As part of the national contract secured by Groundwork UK, Groundwork South Yorkshire successfully launched Bags of Help across the region. This project will see Tesco’s proceeds from the government’s carrier bag levy being used to improve green spaces. Applications for the first round of funding are to be shortlisted early in the new year. Read more about the national scheme here.
