About

National Citizen Service (NCS) is the government’s flagship youth programme for 15 to 17 year olds across the UK.

In partnership with Element Society, Groundwork South Yorkshire delivers the programme to teenagers across Sheffield. As Yorkshire's number 1 NCS provider we have worked with over 1000 young people since 2013, helping them to grow their confidence, develop skills and make new friends.

Our NCS programmes run three times each year, in autumn, spring and summer. All programmes contain the same material but the autumn and spring programmes are shorter so that everyone can take part, even if they’re away for the summer.

In the Yorkshire & Humber region, NCS is supported by the EFL Trust.

Autumn programme

A:

When: October half term (see exact dates in the ‘Events’ section)

Who: Y12 and Y13 age (you do not have to be in school)

Cost: £50

Phase 1: Adventure (3 nights)

You’ll live with your team at an Activity Centre. Take part in rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, zip wire, high ropes and much more!

Phase 2: Future (3 days)

You’ll live at home but come into Sheffield city centre each day to take part in skills workshops. These include self-defence, Apprentice-style challenges, project planning and more!

Phase 3: Making a difference (30 hours – evenings and weekends)

Now you can put your skills into action! In your teams, you’ll design and plan a social action project to benefit your local community. Pitch your idea in the Dragons’ Den to battle it out for some funding!

Phase 4: Graduation

Once you’ve completed the programme, come and celebrate with family and friends! You will also be invited to join the NCS Graduates team which involves planning future events, exclusive work placements and the chance to be on the youth board!

Spring programme

A:

When: Easter holidays (see exact dates in the ‘Events’ section)

Who: This programme is dedicated to young people with additional needs, up to the age of 24.

Cost: £50

This programme is designed with higher staff ratios and a dedicated Special Educational Needs Coordinating Officer for young people with additional needs. All young people are welcome and supported to attend all programmes but we found that many parents preferred this environment for their child with additional needs.
