Bursting with pride at the Ruskin Mill Trust

The Ruskin Mill Trust provides quality services in education, care, training, advice and homes for people with complex learning and behavioural difficulties from the tender age of 7 years old to mature adults.

The Ruskin Mill Trust have recently expanded their facilities to include an outdoor classroom in Eyam, North-East Derbyshire. The outdoor classroom will provide exciting learning and teaching opportunities, where people can learn how to grow their own fruit and vegetables through the agricultural scheme; use the grazing sheep to make wool products; and have a go at learning woodwork and metalwork skills.

However, there is one big problem - there are no permanent toilets or showers on the site! This is absolutely crucial, as the outdoor classroom is in a remote location, high on the hills overlooking the village of Eyam and many of the students from the Brantwood Specialist School, who regularly use the site, have sensory issues, which means they cannot use the current portable toilets onsite.

The Tesco Bags of Help scheme will therefore enable the Ruskin Mill Trust to build top-of-the-range permanent compost toilets and shower block. The design will mould seamlessly into the landscape with the toilet block being timber framed with larch cladding and a green roof. It will also mirror the current outdoor classroom, so they can stand side by side.

The new facilities will have a phenomenal impact on the site, enabling passers- by such as walkers and cyclists to use the site and also expand its use to other youth and community groups, who may want to hold events there, as well as enabling students to spend a day or a weekend away from home, where they can gain confidence and independent living skills in a natural environment.

The outdoor classroom is located in such a beautiful location, that one can’t help but fall in love with it. The passionate and dedicated staff also have grand plans for the site (tree house, low ropes course, nature trail and BMX track to name but a few) – so much so, that one could say they are bursting with pride!
