Woodseats Primary School is made up of two Victorian buildings surrounded by concrete. These concrete areas have been seen as a weakness by Ofsted Inspectors, and are in desperate need of improvement.
As such, the school recently carried out a survey, asking the children what they wanted in their playground, with the children saying they wanted more green spaces and things to jump on and off.
With funding from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, the children will be asked to use their imagination and invent something that can built on the area such as a tree house or ‘shanty house’ - a building that is natural, ramshackle, creative and explorative - perhaps it will be the Three Bears House (from Goldilocks and The Three Bears) or a Gingerbread House! Who knows?
The area will also include a tree trunk, with a softer landing area around it, incorporating humps and hollows to run up and down; jump on and off; and run around. It will also combine a variety of different materials (e.g. stone and wood) and different textures (e.g. rough and smooth). This will ensure that the playground has multiple uses and provide some tricky and challenging terrain to help improve children’s motion and motor skills.
It is hoped that the project will have an impact on children who are currently over-reliant on technology, such as mobile phones, computers, tablets etc. encouraging them to ‘unplug’ and go back to basics, enjoying the wonder of green spaces and outdoor play, as well as developing essential life skills, through communication, interaction and physical exercise.
It is envisaged that the play area will also host ‘Play and Stay Days’ for local nurseries as well as hosting breakfast, holiday and after-school clubs. Hopefully, parents will see their children enjoying outdoor play and this will encourage them to take them more frequently into the outdoors. It will also enable parents to develop good support networks with each other, helping to face the challenges of parenting together.
