The charity, which has pledged to help 100,000 households across the UK out of fuel poverty by 2015, will provide tailored advice through energy saving experts known as ‘Green Doctors’. The Doctors will be taking up residency at Fargate for a period of five weeks as part of the npower mobile exhibition.
“This is a great opportunity for Groundwork’s Green Doctors to reach a mass audience,” says Wendy Bussey who heads up the Groundwork initiative.
“By being located on the npower mobile exhibition in Sheffield City Centre, we hope to reach as many people as possible over the next 5 weeks, providing them with information about how to keep their homes warmer for less money.”
During 2010-11, Green Doctors worked with South Yorkshire Housing Association, Sheffield Homes and Pennine Housing 2000 to deliver energy saving measures to over 300 homes. The measures installed through this work have been calculated to save 239,550 tonnes of CO2 over their lifetime, with energy savings of £60-£180 per year for each household.
Green Doctors has visited over 800 homes throughout South Yorkshire, providing free energy assessments and working to change behaviours around energy usage. Advice may be about how to pay for gas or electricity, lifestyle changes to reduce bills or basic DIY measures such as insulation, draft-proofing or water saving measures.
Susan Rutherford, a homeowner from Gleadless Valley commented:
'They did a full energy assessment of my home, explained the energy efficiency ratings on my kitchen appliances, and then used an energy monitor to show me how much electricity I use. Now I only boil the amount of water I need in my kettle and I don't leave appliances on stand-by. I also got some really helpful information about how to switch energy suppliers. I would definitely recommend a Green Doctor visit; the advice about making little changes has made a big difference!'
Originally devised in 2003 in the East Midlands, Green Doctors is now a trademarked service being delivered nationally. Green Doctors has been delivered by Groundwork South Yorkshire now for four years, with advice delivered to some of the most vulnerable individuals, and in some of the most deprived communities; at a neighbourhood level and on a door-to-door basis.
