Grow Your Own at Oasis Academy Watermead

The Oasis Academy Watermead is located in one of the most deprived areas in the country.

The Oasis Academy Watermead is located in one of the most deprived areas in the country. There are high levels of mobility in the area, with families often moving in and out of the region, staying only for short periods of time. For many of these families, English is not their first language, yet despite this they are very keen to build links with the school and get involved with the local community.

Working together with the Southey Community Allotment Partnership and the Woodland Trust, the Tesco Bags of Help scheme will help develop the adjoining five acres of land next to the academy into a community orchard and allotment. This will impact massively on the local community and pupils, giving them a shared space where they can grow their own fruit and vegetables, learn about where food comes from as well as learning about food waste and its implications. The home-grown school produce will then be distributed around the community and to local food banks, helping to tackle the challenges of food poverty in the local area.

It is envisaged that events such as ‘Big Cook, Little Cook’ where parents and children have the opportunity to cook together, will also help prepare children for adulthood as well as using their own grown products as ingredients.

The school will seek volunteers from the local community to help maintain the orchard and allotment; helping to build and prepare planting areas; plant seeds, harvest food; prepare soil; and up-cycle/recycle things to be used.  Embedding these skills will hopefully also help people get into employment and therefore reduce the high levels of unemployment in the area.

If you want to help enrich this community’s life through the love of plants and help create a vibrant space where people can grow and learn about food, then please vote for them in the following Tesco stores:
