Learning with a Leafy Twist at Doncaster Deaf Trust

Doncaster Deaf Trust was founded in 1829 as a school designed to equip young deaf people to become self-supporting adults.

The Trust believes that it is important that young people receive specialist intervention in order to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in employment and thereby achieve their full potential.

It is an under-statement to say that the work of the Trust is impressive, in addition to the development of a nursery, school, college and care home, the Trust has a joinery workshop and beauty salon to help provide work experience for young deaf people.

With their Tesco Bags of Help grant, the Doncaster Deaf Trust aims to set up a Forest School. This is an innovative and inspirational approach that allows all people to take responsibility for their own learning through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland and natural environment setting. The creation of a log cabin, fire pits, beehive and weather stations will create more social activities to increase interaction and communication. It will also help introduce both children and parents to the countryside, nature and the great outdoors. In addition it will help provide children with tools to risk assess their own environment, teaching them what is safe or unsafe.

The project is bound to have a huge impact, not only on the current students but also on the local community and individuals who will be invited to use the Forest School for woodland sessions or parties. There is much fun and joy to be had - learning how to build a fire, toasting marshmallows, collecting and learning about different leaves and making things from wood. This 'leafy' learning sounds fantastic fun for everyone!
