When Matt was first referred to the Talent Match Enterprise Camp by Disability Sheffield in September 2015, he thought it would be a good opportunity to get out of the house for a few days.
Initially he felt very shy and kept to himself but the Camp activities, which included archery, raft building, problem solving games and canoeing, really helped his confidence – encouraging interaction and teamwork.
Matt’s experience on Camp was transformational, he found a confidence and drive that he did not have before, and was delighted to sign up as one of our Enterprise Ambassadors to help other people have the same experience that he did.
Through his role as a Talent Match Enterprise Ambassador, Matt has now attended five Camps. Matt is a valued member of the team, offering guidance and support to the young people taking part as well as providing a fresh perspective for staff members when planning activities. His experience has provided him with valuable skills and knowledge and has helped him realise a real passion a for youth work. Matt has continued to work with Groundwork SY’s Empowerment Team, who have helped him begin to plan a career, signposting him to places where he can get help with English and Maths. In September 2016 Matt is starting college to study youth work – all thanks to his Camp experience.
Here's what Matt had to say:
“The ambassador programme is a fun and helpful programme that helps you build your confidence. You also get to help people who are, or have been, in the same situation as you. You get to work with some nice and friendly people when doing this and it can help you make lots of new friends.”
