Last year, Groundwork South Yorkshire took over the management of various allotment sites in Royston, Barnsley. It soon became clear that two sites, Jubilee Fields and Poplar Terrace, were in need of some improvement so that they could be fully enjoyed by the tenants.
This series will chronicle the changes that have taken place thanks to the hard work and determination of the Groundwork South Yorkshire team.
Part 3: After
As you saw in Part 2 of the series, the team constructed fences, cut back overgrowth and managed to shift tonnes of rubbish in 8 tightly packed skips!
We popped along to the allotment sites last week to catch up with the team and find out how all the hard work has paid off.
New fences were constructed by dissmantling pallets and reassembling them into sturdy, attractive fences. The fences have impressed plot holders who now have clearer pathways, neater plots and an increased sense of pride in the site.
Five new plots were created from clearing away rubbish and cutting back overgrowth. These plots have been designed to cater to those who may feel that they want to rent a smaller plot as they can be easier to manage. Plots have been clearly marked out and are available now.
In Part 4: The Plots, have a look at some of the lovely plots currently being rented out.
We manage and maintain allotments on behalf of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council.
