The Chislett Centre is based on the Kimberworth Park estate, an area of high deprivation in Rotherham.
On the outside, the centre may look tired and run down. However, the welcome you receive inside is immediate, with friendly, dedicated and passionate staff and a large, bright and warm seating area and kitchen. The activities taking place on site are plentiful, with anything from ‘Men in Sheds’, a group for bereaved people (who have recently set to work making hedgehog houses to encourage wildlife to the area), to a ‘Wellbeing room’ offering people a little rest and relaxation, where local people can have a massage or get their hair and nails done.
There is also a gym, which attracts people who are put off by the more conventional gyms and offers heavily discounted rates, at £1 per session. In the daytime, 50% of all gym users are over 60 years old, with the majority suffering from health issues. There is a real sense of community here. Nobody does anything in isolation and there is a real mix ages, with gym-goers ranging between 14 - 90 years old! This, in turn, helps increase social interaction between the generations and builds mutual respect.
The Tesco Bags of Help grant will provide equipment for an Outdoor Gym. This will reduce pressure on the indoor gym, which at the moment is very popular as well as enabling people sitting in the café to watch other users exercising and encourage them to join in and give them a reason to get out and about. "It will increase the opportunity for people to take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing" says Denise Butterrell, a Member of the Senior Leadership Team.
This is people-power in every sense, with services and facilities at the Chislett Centre being community-owned and community-delivered. "No one tells us what to do apart from the community" says Denise.
