Rabbit Ings creates a new habitat for wildlife

The team at Rabbit Ings decided it was time for a new pond on the site.

Ponds are fantastic for the environment, giving an accessible habitat for wildlife to thrive. Not only can you find frogs and pond vegetation but insects, birds and animals also travel quite far to visit!

We caught up with Mick Birkinshaw, the Park Ranger, to get the latest. “We’d tried to dig this pond out before but the water kept evaporating because the pond wasn't deep enough.

To try and combat this, we dug out a smaller, deeper section of the pond and filled this with water.

So far, the pond is doing well! I put a couple of plants in the middle, to get things started, but with time wildlife will come to make their home here and plants will grow naturally.”

We took a trip to visit the new pond at Rabbit Ings Country Park and took some photos!

It might not look all that fancy right now but the beauty of ponds is watching nature take over.

Stay tuned for more updates on the new pond later in the year!
