Since joining the Talent Match programme, RC has gone from strength to strength - addressing his mental health, demonstrating entrepreneurial skills by designing and selling T-Shirts and enrolling on creative courses.
RC left school with good GCSE qualifications, with C and above in GCSE Math’s, English & Science. His favourite subject was Art for which he received an A. Fuelled by his passion of art and design, he progressed to College to study BTEC Diploma in Art & Design for two years. RC enjoyed the course immensely and its creative outlet, but began to find his mental health was deteriorating. Despite his mental health problems and following the advice from college lecturers, RC applied for the BA Hons Degree in 3D Design.
However, RC during his first year at university, RC began to find himself getting more stressed, isolated and his mental health really began to suffer. As a result, RC decided to leave after the first year and get the medical help he needed, with the long term aim to return to university once he felt ready.
In 2015, RC Began working with the local Mental Health (Early Interventions Team) which enabled him to get the tools and medication to deal with his health problems. Looking at opportunities to help aid his recovery, he showed interest in Talent Match and its flexible and client centred approach. A referral was made from the Early Interventions Team.
RC then met with a Talent Match coach in Barnsley, and after a few meetings began to feel ready to think about the future again. He spoke to his coach about using his designs to do with BMX bikes and skate parks and producing T-shirts with a view of selling them at events and festivals. Talent Match with it’s Barrier Busting facility was able to buy the inks and printing kit and also had a specialist Self Employment Coach, should RC feel confident to take his ideas further.
RC starting creating his designs and began to find his confidence increasing. As RC continues working with his designs, he has felt ready to go back into education and has enrolled on Creative Writing Course, with a couple days Residential at Northern College. This is a fantastic step to possibly returning to full time study or enrolling on self employment courses.
‘Talent Match SCR has been a fantastic help! It has allowed me to use my creative skills to help regain my confidence again and reassess the previous experiences I have had with education, this time I can take it at my pace’
If RC had support from Talent Match at the beginning of entering Higher Education, we could have assessed if he was ready and looked at other options instead of university at that stage.
After over a year and a half with Talent Match, RC has improved mental health, improved confidence by leaving the house and attending events and short courses, has a creative outlet financially paid for by Talent Match and improved family and friend relationships.
