Skanska Volunteer at Rabbit Ings

Employees from the construction firm Skanska recently enjoyed a day of conservation work on the Rabbit Ings Country Park near Royston, Barnsley.

The day was part of Skanska’s corporate volunteering programme. The team was guided by Groundwork’s experienced park rangers.

‘We focused the day’s work on heather management. Heathland is a priority habitat in South Yorkshire, so we want to encourage it to spread and keep it in good health,’ explains Tom Gorman, a park ranger at Rabbit Ings.

They removed self-set birch trees from the heathland (as these would shade out the heather) and replanted them in emergent woodland. They then carried out heather brashing, which involves giving part of the heather a ‘haircut' to encourage new growth and spreading the cuttings with the seeds to areas of bare ground to encourage the heather to spread.

Then, with a different type of customer to normal, the Skanska team built a ‘bug hotel’. Built out of palettes and dead wood, these hotels provide a great environment for a huge variety of invertebrates.
